Marávia is a district of the Tete Province in Mozambique with the administrative seat in the city of Fingoé . Marávia is bordered by the Republic of Zambia to the north, the Zumbo district to the west, the Magoé and Cahora Bassa districts to the south and the Chifunde and Chiuta districts to the east .
geography
With an area of 16,697 square kilometers, Marávia has 99,563 inhabitants (as of 2013). This gives a population density of 6 people per square kilometer.
The district is located in the northwest of the province of Tete and borders the Republic of Zambia in the north, its southern border is formed by the Zambezi , its western border by the Mucanha and its eastern border by the Capoche up to the confluence with the Luia . According to the effective climate classification of Köppen, the climate is humid and moderate with the two seasons of rainy and dry seasons. In the rainy season, which lasts from November to April, more than 95 percent of the annual precipitation falls, in the months of May to October only about 5 millimeters of rain fall. The average temperature is 22 degrees Celsius, the average minimum temperature is 16, the maximum temperature is 28 degrees.
Maravia is hilly with an altitude between 300 and 1,000 meters, the most famous mountains are the Chiputu (1,502 m), the Chuamba (1,335 m) and the Camessongue (1,450 m). The main river is the Zambezi. Other important rivers are the Capoche, Unkanha , Luatize and the Duanga Mucumbudzi .
population
The population is very young, 21 percent are younger than four years, 28 percent are between five and fourteen years old (as of 2013). The illiteracy rate is high, especially among older women (as of 2007):
Over ninety percent of the population does not speak Portuguese, the most important language is Cinyungwè .
Facilities and services
There are 74 primary schools ( Primárias) and three secondary schools (Secundárias) in the district . Of the primary schools, 60 are public schools and 14 are private schools, and all of the secondary schools are public. In primary schools the student-teacher ratio is 53: 1, in secondary schools 15: 1.
There are six health centers in Marávia (as of 2012).

Economy and Infrastructure
In 2007, 45 percent of households had a radio and 0.4 percent a television. 52 percent owned a bicycle and 0.3 percent a car (as of 2007).
Agriculture
Agriculture is the most important source of income for the population. In 2010 there were 17,573 farms with an average size of 2.8 hectares. Almost 85 percent of the farms are family owned and run by three or more people. A third of the farms are smaller than half a hectare, around half of these small farms are run by women. The main crops are corn, sorghum , peanuts, sweet potatoes and beans. There are around 5,000 ranchers (cattle and pigs) and more than 10,000 poultry farmers in the district. Many families secure an additional income by selling wood, firewood, reeds and charcoal as well as by hunting or fishing.

The Zambezi is dammed up by the Cahora Bassa dam to form a 240-kilometer-long artificial lake for generating electricity.
Natural resources
Marávia owns gold, asbestos, coal, iron and the gemstone aquamarine .
