The Niassa province is located in northern Mozambique . It has an area of approx. 129,056 km². Around 1,865,976 people (as of 2017) live in this area.

The capital of the Niassa province is the city of Lichinga with about 85,758 inhabitants. Niassa is the largest and most fertile province of Mozambique, but at the same time it is also the most sparsely populated. After the country gained independence in 1975, attempts were made to resettle people from other provinces in Niassa. However, these attempts were unsuccessful. In 1980 Niassa only had 300,000 inhabitants, 16 years later the population was estimated at 782,365 people.

In 1996, under an agreement signed by President Chissano and South African President Mandela , unpopulated land was made available to South African farmers in the province.

Due to its geomorphological relief, Niassa is the highest province in Mozambique and reaches an average of 700  m . The Lichinga Plateau , which takes up about a quarter of the province, achieves values of up to 1500  m . The Mount Txitonga is with 1848  m the highest point in the province.

Most of the population living here belongs to the Yao ethnic group . Many people speak Yao , Nyanja, or Makua .

In the north of the province is the Niassa Game Reserve , the largest nature reserve in Mozambique.
