Joaquim Alberto Chissano [ ʒu̯ɐˈkim alˈbɛrtu ʃiˈsanu ] (born October 22, 1939 in Malehice ) is a Mozambican politician . He was President of Mozambique from November 6, 1986 to February 2, 2005.

Life

Chissano grew up in a wealthy and influential family. He attended the Liceu Salazar in Lourenço Marques (today Maputo ), where he was the first colored student. From 1960 he studied medicine in Portugal , but had to break off his studies in 1961 due to repression by the secret police PIDE .

He was a co-founder of FRELIMO . Persecuted by the Portuguese colonial power, he went to Paris, where he studied again. In 1974 he was involved in the negotiation of the agreement for independence, until the independence of Mozambique in 1975 he was Prime Minister in the cabinet of Crespo , the country's temporary government. He then became Foreign Minister of the newly founded People's Republic of Mozambique in the Machel I cabinet .

As the successor to Samora Machel , who died in a plane crash in the Lebombo Mountains , he became party leader and president in 1986. At that time the Mozambican Civil War was raging . Chissano conducted negotiations with the RENAMO rebels, which led to a peace agreement in 1992. He also created a new constitution in 1990 that paved the way for multi-party elections and a free market, and improved relations with South Africa.

He was confirmed in office in the 1994 elections and re-elected in 1999. In 2004 he did not run for office anymore; Armando Guebuza was his successor . In July 2003 he was elected President of the African Union for one year .

Joaquim Chissano has represented the South African mining company African Rainbow Minerals as a non-executive director since 2005 . He also serves in the capacity of Vice-Chairman and Director of the of Canada originating and based in Cape Town mining company TEAL Exploration and Mining Inc. , followed by African Rainbow Minerals has been a majority shareholder. He is also an Independent non-executive director at the South African gold mining company Harmony Gold . All of these companies are run by Patrice Motsepe .

Honors

In 2007 he was the first African ex-head of state to be awarded the Mo Ibrahim Prize for good governance . He contributed to the end of the civil war and promoted democratization and economic development. According to the foundation, it is the most lucrative award in the world. The winner is paid $ 5 million over ten years, followed by $ 200,000 annually until the end of his life. In 2009 Chissano was honored with East Timor's highest honor, the Grande Collar des Ordem de Timor-Leste . In 2015 he received the North-South Prize of the Council of Europe. In 2018 he received the South African Order of the Companions of OR Tambo .
