Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete (born  October 7, 1950 in Msoga , Tanganyika ) was President of Tanzania from 2005 to 2015 . He belongs to the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party .

He attended from 1958 to 1961, the primary school in his hometown, from 1962 to 1965, the middle school a school in Lusonga of which he the Kibaha Secondary School changed, he involved in the 1969 GCSE made. He was a student at Tanga Secondary School for a year before enrolling at the University of Dar es Salaam in 1972 . Six years later he finished his studies there with a degree in economics . In 1983 he completed a one-year training as a company commander in the army .

Presidency

He began his political career as a member of parliament in his home district of Bagamoyo and - after its division - the resulting Chalinze district . He was the only MP who represented his district for three terms in parliament. At the beginning of the 1990s he was Minister of Finance and Energy, and since the beginning of the Mkapa government in 1995 in the office of Foreign Minister.

As a presidential candidate of the ruling former unity party CCM, Kikwete was elected President of Tanzania on December 14, 2005 with around 80% of the votes and was sworn in on December 21. In 2008 he was President of the African Union . In the presidential election of October 31, 2010, Kikwete was elected for another term with 61%. His strongest challenger Wilbrod Slaa ( Chadema ) got 26 percent of the vote. In the presidential election in October 2015, Kikwete could not run again due to the two-term limit in office.

Kikwete has faced allegations of corruption throughout his political career to date.

After the presidency

After his replacement as President Kikwete was appointed Chancellor of the University of Dar es Salaam by his successor John Magufuli . He has officially been in this position since January 2016.
