Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz
General Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz ( Arabic محمد ولد عبد العزيز, DMG Muḥammad walad ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ; * December 20, 1956 in Akjoujt , Mauritania ) is a Mauritanian politician. From 2008 to 2009 he was chairman of the Haut conseil d'état (High Council of State) and thus de facto head of state of Mauritania since the military coup on August 6, 2008 or the day after the impeachment of the elected President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi by the junta. On April 15, 2009, he resigned from this post in order to run in the June presidential election, which he won in July 2009. In 2014 Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz was confirmed in office.
Career
In 2005, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, then with the rank of Colonel , took part as commander of the Presidential Guard (BASEP) in a leading role in the coup against Maaouya Ould Sid'Ahmed Taya and then became a member of the military junta CMJD . After this junta disbanded after the election of Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi as president, the new president promoted Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz to general in September 2007 and appointed him chief of the general staff.
In 2008, conflicts began between the president and the newly formed government on the one hand and leading officers around Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz and parts of the ruling party ADIL on the other. On August 2, 2008, 25 members of parliament and 23 senators (members of the First Chamber of Parliament) resigned from the ADIL parliamentary group , allegedly at the instigation of the military , which cost the government the parliamentary majority and triggered a serious state crisis. In this situation, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz had President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi, Prime Minister Yahya Ould Ahmed El Waghef and the Minister of the Interior arrested on 6 August by members of BASEP. The following day it was announced that the “High Council of State”, of which Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz is president, would take over the constitutional rights and duties of the president with immediate effect. A new government is to be formed shortly, the parliament and all municipal administrations are to remain as before.
In July 2009, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz won the presidential election in Mauritania.
In October 2012, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz was shot by a military patrol on his way back to the capital Nouakchott from a weekend stay in Tweila . He was flown to Paris to treat the wounds. The incident was initially classified as an assassination by local radio stations. In government statements, however, there was talk of an oversight ("shot by mistake").
On January 30, 2014, the General Assembly of the African Union elected him chairman of the AU.
In November 2015, he is said to have abandoned the Mauritanian Supercup game between the teams ASC Tevragh Zeïna and ACS Ksar in the 63rd minute of the game when the score was 1-1. As La Gazzetta dello Sport reports in its international edition, the rulers have instead given orders to go straight to the penalty shoot-out . The team from Tevragh-Zeina later emerged victorious from the decision shooting. The president's behavior then sparked a public storm of protest.
In accordance with the constitution, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz did not run for the 2019 presidential election .
