Ba Mamadou dit Mbaré ( Arabic با مامادو إمباري, * 1946 in Waly Diantang , Mauritania ; died January 10, 2013 in Paris , France ) was a Mauritanian politician who was President of the Senate of Mauritania from 2007 until his death . As President of the Senate, he succeeded Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz as head of state on April 15, 2009, when Abdel Aziz stepped down to run for the 2009 presidential election. Mbaré thus became the first black African head of state in Mauritania.

Life

Youth and career

Mbaré was born in 1946 in Waly Diantang, a village on the border with Senegal in the Gorgol region. After studying in Mauritania, he continued his studies in what was then the Soviet Union at the Academy of Agriculture of Ukraine in Kiev (1967-73) and earned a degree in veterinary medicine . He then received various posts in Mauritania, first as research officer at the Laboratory of Fisheries (1974-75), then as head of the research center for fisheries in Nouadhibou , as head of the Department of Oceanography and Marine Biology (1976-78) and finally as director of the National Center of Oceanographic and Fishing Research (1978-80).

Mbaré was technical advisor to the Ministry of Fisheries (1980-81) and was mayor of Waly in 1986 (-2003). During this time he also worked as a functionary of the Ministry of Fisheries and was then appointed General Director of the Nouadhibou Free Port (2002-2003). Under President Maaouya Ould Sid'Ahmed Taya , he served as Minister of Fisheries (November 13, 2003–2005) until Taya was overthrown in a coup.

Mbaré was elected to the Senate as MP for Maghama in 2007 and was elected President of the Senate on April 26, 2007 with 40 to 11 votes.

Presidency

Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz seized power in 2008 and deposed President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi in a coup . But then he resigned from all political and military offices on April 15, 2009 to run for the July 2009 presidential election. as a result, Mbaré automatically followed him as head of state in an interim function and became the first black African head of state in Mauritania.

Abdel Aziz won the election, was sworn in on August 5, 2009 and took over the position of head of state from Mbaré.

Mbaré died on January 10, 2013 in Paris.
