Mohamed Mahmoud Ould Ahmed Louly ( Arabic محمد محمود ولد أحمد لولي, DMG Muḥammad Maḥmūd walad Aḥmad Lūlī ; * January 1, 1943 in Tidjikja ; † March 16, 2019 in Nouakchott ) was President of Mauritania and Chairman of the National Rescue Committee from June 3, 1979 to January 4, 1980 .

Life

Louly joined the army in November 1960, the year of independence, and was trained in French military academies. He then took on various leadership roles in Moktar Ould Daddah's government .

In 1978 he was a founding member of the Comité militaire de redressement national (CMRN) , which, under the leadership of Mustafa Ould Salek , overthrew President Moktar Ould Daddah on July 10, 1978 because of the Western Sahara conflict by means of a military coup .

On April 6, 1979, he founded the successor committee, Comité militaire de salut national (CMSN), with Colonel Ould Bouceif and Mohamed Khouna Ould Haidalla . Louly, who held several ministerial posts in Salek's government, succeeded Mustafa Ould Salek in the office of President on June 3, 1979 after his resignation in view of his loss of power in the CMSN and the economic problems resulting from the Western Sahara conflict and the widening gap between Moors and Salek Black Africans in the country.

Seven months later - on January 4, 1980 - Louly was deposed and replaced by his Prime Minister Mohamed Khouna Ould Haidalla.

Since then he has lived in isolation from politics and the public. He was considered a religious and reserved person.
