Senate of Mauritania

The Senate of Mauritania , Majlis al-Chouyoukh ( Arabic مجلس الشيوخ, DMG Maǧlis aš-Šuyūḫ ) was the upper house of the Parliament of Mauritania between 1992 and 2017 .

history

After a coup on August 3, 2005, the Senate was dissolved for the first time. Then, after a revision of the constitution, which was adopted by referendum, reinstated and re-constituted by elections in February 2007.

In 2017 the Senate was dissolved again by a constitutional referendum on August 15, 2017 .

composition

The Senate had 56 members, 53 of whom were elected for six years by municipal councillors , with one third being elected every two years and three other members being elected by Mauritanians abroad. The last election took place in 2007 .
