Gorgol ( Arabic ولاية كركول, DMG Wilāyat Kurkūl ) is the fifth administrative region in Mauritania . It is located in the south of the country and only extends over a small area.

The capital is Kaédi ; The cities of M'Bout and Maghama are also in the region . Gorgol is divided into the four departments M'Bout , Kaédi , Maghama and Monguel .

Within Mauritania, Gorgol is adjacent to the administrative regions of Brakna in the west, Assaba in the east and Guidimaka in the southeast. To the southwest, Gorgol borders Senegal , the border being determined by the Senegal River .

A 2017 population estimate in Gorgol assumed 358,000 inhabitants.
