Brakna ( Arabic ولاية البراكنة, DMG Wilāyat al-Barākina ) is the third of the 13 administrative regions in Mauritania . In 2017, the region's population was estimated at 320,400.

Brakna is a comparatively small region in the southwest of the country and borders on Senegal , separated by the Senegal River , as well as the other regions of Tagant , Assaba and Gorgol .

The capital of the region is Aleg and another important city is Bogué . Brakna is divided into the five districts of Aleg , M'Bagne , Bababé , Boghé and Magta Lahjar .
