Yahya Ould Ahmed El Waghef

Yahya Ould Ahmed El Waghef (* 1960 in Moudjéria ; alternative spelling El Waghf or El-Ouakef ; Arabic يحيى ولد أحمد الواقف, DMG Yaḥyā walad Aḥmad al-Wāqif ) is a Mauritanian politician (ADIL). He was Prime Minister of Mauritania from May 6, 2008 until he was ousted by a coup on August 6, 2008.

life and career

El Waghef was born in Moudjéria in the Tagant region in 1960 . He completed his training in Mauritania and Morocco . In 1986 he became a professor in the Faculty of Law and Economics at Nouakchott University . 1987–1989 he was responsible for statistics and programming at the Commissioner's Office for Food Security, and from 1989–1999 he was Chargé de Program at the Office of the World Food Program . From January to August 2003 he was general director of the Mauritanian gas company SOMAGAZ , from September 2003 to April 2004 director of the Banc d'Arguin National Park . From October 2004 to April 2005 he was Secretary General of the Ministry of Hydraulics and Energy, then General Director of Air Mauritanie until September 2006 . From February 2007 he was advisor to the finance minister.

He has been President of ADIL since January 5, 2008 and Prime Minister of Mauritania since May 6, 2008, and thus successor to Zeine Ould Zeidane, who resigned on the same day .

On August 6, 2008, El Waghef was arrested, as was President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi , in a military coup. Behind the coup is said to be a general who was dismissed by the president.
