Presidential election in Mauritania 2019
The 2019 presidential election in Mauritania took place on June 22nd. A possible second ballot should be held on July 6, 2019. According to the electoral commission , Mohamed Ould Ghazouani , supporter of the previous President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz , won with 52% of the votes in the first ballot.
Electoral process and dates
In the first election, each voter has one vote for a candidate. Had none of the candidates received an absolute majority, there would have been a runoff election on July 6th between the two candidates with the highest number of votes. The term of office is five years.
One million of the roughly four million Mauritanians were eligible to vote.
Candidates
Long-time President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz was no longer allowed to run after two terms in office. The following six politicians were available:
- Mohamed Ould Ghazouani , Union pour la République (UPR), previously Minister of Defense, favorite and party friend of the previous incumbent
- Sidi Mohamed Ould Boubacar , former Prime Minister (Tewassoul, supported by other parties and groups)
- Biram Dah Abeid , anti-slavery activist
- Mohamed Ould Mouloud, member of the opposition
- Kane Hamidou Baba, university professor
- Mohammed Al-Amin al-Wafi, economist
Result
According to the election commission, Ghazouani won with 52% of the vote in the first ballot. The opposition candidates questioned the result. The Constitutional Council confirmed the result on July 1, 2019. Ghazouani is scheduled to take office on August 1, 2019. [outdated]
One result of the election was the first peaceful change of power in Mauritania since independence in 1960.
