North-South price

The North-South Prize (also: Lisbon North-South Prize ) has been awarded annually by the Council of Europe to two candidates since 1995 . One candidate each from the north and one from the south (preferably a man and a woman).

The candidates excel in the following areas: protecting human rights, defending pluralistic democracy, raising public awareness of issues relating to global solidarity and interdependence, and strengthening the North-South partnership. It is awarded for, in the opinion of the jurors, extraordinary achievements in the field of human rights, democracy and diplomacy between North and South - especially between Europe and Africa.

The jury for the award consists of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe and members of the North-South Center (an autonomous organization of the Council of Europe in Lisbon ).

The North-South Prize will be presented to the winners at an official ceremony in Lisbon at the beginning of the following year by the President of the Republic of Portugal , the Speaker of Parliament and a member of the government, and by the Council of Europe the Secretary General, the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) and the chairman of the Executive Committee of the North-South Center.
