André Azoulay

André Azoulay (born April 17, 1941 in Essaouira ) is an adviser to the Moroccan King Mohammed VI. He is considered one of the most influential personalities at the royal court and is co-founder of several foundations for the dialogue between cultures and peace in the Middle East. He describes himself as an "Arab Moroccan of the Jewish faith".

life and career

Azoulay was born in 1941 to a Jewish family in Essaouira, a town that then had a large Jewish community. As a youth he was politically left-wing . He studied economics and international politics and began a career as a bank manager in Paris in 1966 . From 1967 he was at the bank BNP Paribas , where he rose to the position of deputy chairman and was mainly responsible for public relations. In 1991 he was appointed as an economic advisor to Rabat by the Moroccan King Hassan II . As such, he worked on the program of financial and economic reforms of the 1990s and, from 1993, was also instrumental in the plan for privatization and deregulation of the economy.

After Hassan's death in 1999, Azoulay kept his position under his son and successor Mohammed VI. at. He sometimes describes himself as a member of the "very elitist" club of Jewish advisors to Muslim rulers, of which he is currently the only member.

Azoulay has been campaigning for peace in the Middle East since the 1970s. In 1974 he founded the Foundation for this purpose Identité et Dialogue , a group of about 60 Jewish personalities from France, who spoke out for the creation of a Palestinian state as a neighbor of Israel and meeting regularly in the 1980s with the then in Tunisia located PLO organized.

In 2008, Azoulay became chairman of the Anna Lindh Foundation, an office he held until the end of 2014. He is also vice-chairman of the Spanish foundation Tres Culturas (Three Cultures), which promotes cross-border cultural activities in the Mediterranean area, member of the governing body of the University of Al Akhawayn in Ifrane , Morocco.

Azoulay is married to the writer Katia Azoulay, who was also born in Essaouira, and has three daughters who live in Paris. His daughter Audrey Azoulay was France's Minister of Culture and Communication from February 2016 to May 2017; on October 13, 2017 she was nominated for the post of Director General of UNESCO .
