Mary Robinson
Mary Robinson ( Irish : Máire Mhic Róibín , born May 21, 1944 in Ballina , Ireland ) is an independent politician and was President of Ireland and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights . Your political work is primarily focused on climate justice .
Life
Mary Robinson studied law . At age 25, she became a professor of constitutional and criminal law at Trinity College , Dublin . From 1969 to 1989 she was a Member of the Irish House of Lords . After her victory in the presidential election of November 7, 1990 , Mary Robinson, a member of the Labor Party , was the first female president of the Republic of Ireland from 1990 to 1997 and the first female president who was not a member or supported by Fianna Fáil . With Mary McAleese , she was again followed by a woman in this post.
In 1997 Robinson became the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and held this office until September 2002. Since 2002 she has been Honorary President of the development aid organization Oxfam . In 2004 and 2005 she opened the counter event Public Eye on Davos during the World Economic Forum in Davos . She legitimized resistance on the street, after all, human rights were fought for there. Equally necessary for the UN human rights norms are other instruments such as the WEF, which would have to ask itself why the voluntary Global Compact does not achieve its goals.
In 2008 she became President of the International Commission of Jurists , which she held until 2012.
In 2010 she founded the Mary Robinson Foundation - Climate Justice (Mary Robinson Foundation for Climate Justice ), whose chairman is.
In March 2013, the UN Security Council elected her special envoy for the Great African Lakes region , with the task of implementing a United Nations-sponsored agreement to end violence in Central Africa. She held the post until July 2014.
In July 2014, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon appointed her Special Envoy on Climate Change. Her main task was initially to prepare for the UN climate conference in Paris in 2015 .
Robinson is a founding member and chairman of the Elders .
Mary Robinson is married with three children.
