Danielle Émilienne Isabelle Mitterrand , née Gouze (born October 29, 1924 in Verdun , Département Meuse , † November 22, 2011 in Paris ), was a French resistance fighter of the Resistance and author . Danielle was married to François Mitterrand , the French President from 1981 to 1995, and thus “ First Lady ” of her country. She chaired the France Libertés Foundation - Fondation Danielle-Mitterrand .

Life

Gouze was born to Antoine Gouze, a school principal, and Renée Flachot, a school teacher. At the age of 17 she was involved in the Resistance , the French resistance movement against the German occupation of France in World War II and the fascist collaboration government . It was there that she met François Mitterrand. She married him on October 28, 1944 in the town hall, and they were later married in the Saint-Séverin church in Paris . The couple had three children: Pascal, Jean-Christophe and Gilbert . She was married to François Mitterrand until his death on January 8, 1996, but had to "share" him with Anne Pingeot for many years .

On July 6, 1991, she was caught in a car bomb while on a charity trip to Iraq, but was uninjured.

Her sister Christine Gouze-Rénal was married to the French actor and director Roger Hanin .

Awards

French schools named after Danielle Mitterrand opened in the Iraqi cities of Erbil and Sulaimaniyya on October 5 and 7, 2009, respectively.
