Anne Pingeot (born May 13, 1943 in Clermont-Ferrand ) is a French art historian . The daughter of Pierre Pingeot, an industrialist in the automotive parts industry from Clermont-Ferrand related to the Michelin tire family, was curator of the sculpture department of the Louvre and Musée d'Orsay in Paris and author of numerous specialist books. She became known to a wider public in 1994 as the long-time lover of French President François Mitterrand (1916–1996, term of office 1981 to 1995).

In 1961, Pingeot met her father's occasional golf partner, 27 years his senior, in Hossegor on the Bay of Biscay . The relationship, which lasted from 1962 until Mitterrand's death, comes from a daughter born in 1974, the journalist and writer Mazarine Pingeot . Mitterrand confessed to fatherhood in January 1984, maintaining the highest level of discretion.

During Mitterrand's presidency, she lived with their daughter at 11 Quai Branly, an outbuilding on the other side of the Seine , about one kilometer from the Élysée Palace , which usually housed close employees of the French presidents. Anne Pingeot and her daughter were given personal protection. President Mitterrand spent Christmas with his informal family in Upper Egypt and the New Year celebrations with the traditional part in his estate in Latche near Hossegor . At the funeral of François Mitterrand, both parts of the family were united for the first time.

In 2016, Anne Pingeot approved the publication of 1,218 letters that Mitterrand sent her. These letters were published as Lettres à Anne on October 13, 2016, along with some of her comments on them .
