Bernadette Chirac (born May 18, 1933 in Paris as Bernadette Chodron de Courcel ) is a French politician , who was particularly active at the municipal and departmental level, and the widow of the former (22nd) French President Jacques Chirac . She was therefore from May 17, 1995 to May 16, 2007 Première Dame de la République Française (first woman of the Republic of France).

Life and professional development

Bernadette Chirac was born the daughter of Jean-Louis Chodron de Courcel (1907–1985), a sales director, and Marguerite de Brondeau d'Urtières (1910–2000). She was the oldest of three children; her sister Catherine was born in 1946, her brother Jérôme in 1948.

After completing her studies at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris , she married Jacques Chirac on March 16, 1956, whom she had met as a fellow student there. They had two children in 1958 and 1962; the Vietnamese Anh Đào Traxel adopted them around 1979.

At the request of the children, Bernadette Chirac received the international award as Cavalier of the Order of Smiles . In February 2008 she was awarded the Pushkin Medal , a state award of Russia .

  • 1979: Elected to the Conseil général des Départements Corrèze, re-elected in 1992, 1998 and 2004
  • 1990: Founder and chairwoman of the Association le Pont Neuf , a society promoting exchange between Europeans and Asians
  • 1994: Chairwoman of the Fondation Hôpitaux de Paris-Hôpitaux de France , a charity
