The Pushkin Medal ( Russian медаль Пушкина ) is a state medal of Russia .

purpose

The Pushkin Medal is awarded "for services in the field of culture, the Enlightenment, the humanities, literature and art, for a great contribution to the study and preservation of cultural heritage, to the rapprochement and mutual cultural enrichment of nations and peoples" .

The award was created on May 9, 1999 by the first President of the Russian Federation , Boris Yeltsin .

Description of the medal

The Pushkin medal is made of solid silver. It has a round shape with a diameter of 32 mm with a curved edge on both sides. On the front side, Alexander Pushkin's signature is emblazoned in relief, including the number of the medal. The reverse of the medal bears the profile of the Russian national poet Pushkin, a self-portrait from 1823.

The medal is worn on a 24 millimeter wide blue ribbon made of moiré silk with a golden longitudinal stripe, the width of which is 2.5 mm and 5 millimeters from the right edge of the ribbon.

The state Pushkin Medal of the Russian Federation should not be confused with:

  • the Alexander Pushkin Prize for writers who publish in Russian, which was awarded by the Alfred Toepfer Foundation (1989–2005),
  • the Pushkin Prize of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1881–1990),
  • the Pushkin Medal of the International Association of Teachers of Russian Language and Literature MAPRYAL (since 1979).
