Werner Stauffacher (born February 7, 1945 in Zurich ; † June 14, 2012 in Stäfa ) was a Swiss lawyer .

Life

Stauffacher grew up in Zurich. At the University of Zurich from 1965 to 1971 he first studied natural sciences , then law . After completing his dissertation , he began working as a freelance lawyer in 1976. Stauffacher was married and the father of seven children.

Proceedings against Stauffacher

Stauffacher was himself involved in procedures and processes several times. In some cases, the proceedings aroused great public interest.

Inheritance dispute

In a legal dispute about the legacy of Hildegard Kirchbach, who died in Basel in 1995, which received much public attention, the Swiss Federal Court declared Stauffacher unworthy of inheritance in 2006. Stauffacher had taken advantage of the relationship of trust that had arisen immorally and did not point out the conflict of interests when she appointed him as her heir. This judgment was voted “worst judgment of the year” by the magazine Plädoyer .

Trienekens bribe scandal

In 2002, Stauffacher was targeted by the Cologne public prosecutor's office as part of an investigation into bribery payments during the construction of the Cologne-Niehl garbage furnace . The company of Hellmut Trienekens , now a subsidiary of RWE , had mandated Stauffacher related to mutual assistance procedures. The aim was supposedly to prevent German authorities from gaining knowledge of black funds and criminal agreements. According to a report in the magazine Der Spiegel, Stauffacher received 10 million German marks for his work. The investigations by the public prosecutor related to suspected money laundering and involvement in bribery of officials and politicians. Stauffacher rejected the allegations. The proceedings were closed in 2005.

False notarization dispute

Another, also very high-profile case against Stauffacher related to the allegation of fraudulent authentication. The accused lawyer had disempowered a client despite the withdrawal of his mandate. In 2001 a book funded by Stauffacher was written on the case. After several trials, the Zurich Higher Court finally acquitted Stauffacher on October 15, 2002 of all allegations. The acquittal became final in December 2002.

Pro Juventute

As the central secretary at the time and delegate of the commission of the Pro Juventute Foundation , he promoted the reconciliation between the Foundation and the Manouches and Yeniche (Swiss term: " Fahrende ") regarding the earlier and controversial activities of the foundation's own aid organization Kinder der Landstrasse .

Russia

Werner Stauffacher supported the economic, political and cultural relations between Russia and Switzerland. In 2004 he founded the Cooperation Council Switzerland / Russia . He financed the publication of two books. In 2005 Stauffacher initiated the Swiss-Russian Journalism Prize. In June 2009 Stauffacher hosted the 11th Congress of the World Association of Russian Press WARP in Lucerne. As part of this congress, a plaque donated by him for Lev Tolstoy was inaugurated. He was also the initiator of the Switzerland-Russia parliamentary friendship group .

Czech Republic

Stauffacher was also the honorary consul of the Czech Republic .
