Peter Josef Nobel (born July 17, 1945 in St. Gallen ) is a Swiss lawyer and lawyer specializing in business law and capital markets law .

Academic background

Peter Nobel studied political science at the University of St. Gallen (HSG) and completed his studies with a dissertation on the subject of “Europeanization of company law” (Dr. rer. Publ.). He then worked for three years as a research assistant at Arthur Meier-Hayoz at the University of Zurich ( commercial and corporate law ) and spent the next 1 ½ years at the University of Göttingen with Franz Wieacker (legal-historical aspects in the area of ​​corporate law) . Nobel was a visiting scholar at Lomonossow University in Moscow as assistant to Professor Denisov ( General Theory of Law ) and at Columbia University School of Law in New York .

In 1981 he completed his habilitation as a private lecturer at the University of St. Gallen , where he has been a regular lecturer since 1982. On April 1, 1984, he was appointed adjunct professor and on October 1, 1997, he was appointed associate professor for private, commercial and business law at the University of St. Gallen, where he was also director of the Institute for European Law. He retired on May 11, 2010 .

On March 1, 2007, he was appointed full professor ad personam for Swiss and international commercial and business law at the Faculty of Law at the University of Zurich; he retired on July 31, 2012.

He conducted various courses in banking law at the University of Bern and the University of Geneva and gave the special lecture “International Legal Assistance in Civil, Administrative and Criminal Matters” at the University of Zurich and the University of St. Gallen.

From 1995 to 2013 he was editor-in-chief of the periodical Schweizerische Zeitschrift für Wirtschaftsrecht (SZW). Between 2006 and 2015 he was also the editor of the Jusletter periodical . Nobel wrote numerous publications in various areas of law.

Professional Activities

Nobel was admitted to the bar in 1980. In 1982 he opened his own law firm (now Nobel & Hug ). For 17 years (1980 to 1997) he worked as a substitute judge at the Higher Court / Commercial Court of the Canton of Zurich with regular assignments as an instruction judge; In 1998 he was elected commercial judge. From 1988 to 2000 he was a member of the Swiss Federal Banking Commission (SFBC).

Nobel regularly acts as a consultant, appraiser and supervisor in commercial proceedings.

He is an art collector and lives in Zurich.
