Schweiz am Sonntag was a Swiss Sunday newspaper with the main distribution area in the Swiss Central Plateau and in Southeastern Switzerland . It was the seventh edition of the newspaper association az Nordwestschweiz and the newspaper Die Südostschweiz .

history

In autumn 2007 the newspaper was founded by AZ Medien under the name Sonntag and has been published since then. With the September 26, 2010 issue, the newspaper changed its name to Der Sonntag . On March 24, 2013, the newspaper was renamed Switzerland on Sunday , as it was now also the Sunday edition of Southeastern Switzerland . The editorial team consisted of around 35 people, the editor-in-chief was Patrik Müller .

The newspaper appeared in five national leagues : "Politics", "Economy", "Society", "Culture" and "Sport". As the sixth league, a corresponding regional league also appeared in the regions of Graubünden, Glarus, Gaster-See, Limmattal / Zurich, Aargau, Basel and Baselland, Solothurn / Oberaargau, Olten and Zofingen. Since April 24, 2016, the newspaper has appeared with a slightly different layout and an additional section entitled “Tomorrow”, which dealt with future topics from science and society, in particular the consequences of the digital revolution.

The last edition of Switzerland appeared on Sunday on February 26, 2017 . Instead, AZ Medien has been publishing an expanded Saturday edition of the Aargauer Zeitung under the title Switzerland on the weekend since March 4, 2017 . Declining advertising revenues and high costs for printing and distribution were given as reasons for the discontinuation. At the beginning of 2016, the large weekly circulation of the Aargauer Zeitung on Thursday was reduced to a few issues per year.

criticism

Editor-in-chief Patrik Müller published an article in Switzerland on Sunday in August 2014 about the mayor of Baden and then National Councilor Geri Müller . He had chatted with a woman for several months, including sending her naked selfies. The communication took place partly during working hours and at his place of work. Finally, there was also a police operation on the woman. Therefore, in his article, Patrik Müller formulated the suspicion that Geri Müller had abused his office as mayor. The article sparked a media hunt for the politician. Thereupon 18 active and former national and state councilors from seven parties submitted a complaint to the Swiss press council against Switzerland on Sunday . In their opinion, the whole political culture threatens to be damaged if the Geri Müller case catches on. The press council agreed with them, seeing no public interest in a report on the politician's erotic chat relationship. The possible possibility of abuse of office could have been eliminated with sufficient research. The press council found that Switzerland had seriously violated the private and intimate sphere of politician Geri Müller on Sunday . Peter Wanner , publisher of the newspaper, defended the publication that sexist acts by politicians in office do not enjoy the protection of privacy. On September 24, 2017, Geri Müller was voted out of office as mayor of Baden, as well as a member of the city council. In 2018, AZ Medien and Geri Müller reached an out-of-court settlement. AZ Medien and Patrik Müller expressed their regret to Geri Müller for the inconvenience he experienced as a result. The parties have agreed not to disclose the details of the agreement. The criminal proceedings initiated by Geri Müller against Patrik Müller were discontinued by the public prosecutor due to the out-of-court settlement.
