history

The magazine was founded in 1926 by Max Ras . Ras was publisher , editor and shareholder all rolled into one. In January 1927, a certified edition of 661,404 copies was distributed free of charge to all households in German-speaking Switzerland . At that time, the observer still appeared monthly. Until 1995 the title was The Swiss Observer .

In 1972, the observer played a key role in ensuring that the forced adoptions of children of travelers , ordered by the organization Kinder der Landstrasse , became the focus of public interest, and in 1978 in the launch of a popular initiative that paved the way for the first Swiss victim assistance law.

In 1995, the Observer was the first Swiss magazine to have an internet presence.

In 2007 the Europe-wide expanding media group Axel Springer AG took over the observer . The Swiss media union Comedia expressed their concern: The concentration in the Swiss media sector will be continued with the takeover of Jean Frey Verlag by the German Springer publishing house. The union is generally concerned about how this process will affect journalistic independence and journalistic diversity across Europe. It is also about protecting the critical line of the two Jean Frey titles Observer and Balance .

In 2015, the observer was brought into a newly founded joint venture between Ringier and Axel Springer, Ringier Axel Springer Schweiz AG , as part of Axel Springer Switzerland .

Content

The observer mainly deals with legal issues from everyday life using practical examples. The spectrum is broad: labor law, tenancy law, monetary issues, socio-political and social law issues, family law, consumer issues, environmental protection. Family topics have been given more prominence since issue 7/07. In addition to providing information, the observer also provides legal advice and support for subscribers. The in-house “Observer Verlag” publishes advice on a wide variety of topics. Additional supplements appearing sporadically deal with topics such as “50+”, “Building and Living”, nutrition and health topics and the like.

Through content syndication , articles, often written almost congruently, can appear in different media. So there are z. B. the article at the observer with almost the same content also at Onmeda .

Since 2016, the observer has been producing more moving image content, which is freely available on the website, YouTube and Facebook.
