Souhayr Belhassen

Souhayr Belhassen (* 1943 in Gabès ) is a Tunisian journalist and defender of human rights. In April 2007, she was president of the International League for Human Rights ( French International Federation for Human Rights , FIDH) selected.

She studied law in Tunis and political science in Paris and then worked as a journalist for the weekly magazine Jeune Afrique and the Reuters news agency . In 1967 Belhassen took part in the protests against the Six Day War . Since 1984 she has been involved in the Tunisian League for Human Rights ( Ligue tunisienne des droits de l'homme (LTDH)), the Tunisian League for Human Rights belonging to the umbrella organization FIDH. After starting a campaign for the petition in 1993 in support of Algerian women, denouncing the inaction of the Tunisian rulers in the face of the situation in the neighboring country, she was exiled for five years. On April 24, 2007 she was elected President of the FIDH. On 1 February 2008 she received from the Faculté de droit , the honorary doctorate of Université catholique de Louvain .
