Gabès ( Arabic قابس, DMG Qābis ) is a city on the Mediterranean coast of Tunisia and the capital of the Gabès governorate of the same name . The city has about 120,000 inhabitants and is located on the GP1 Sfax - Medenine , about 400 km south of Tunis on the Gulf of Gabès .

The Phoenicians had already established a trading post here. Under the Romans , the place was named a Colonia under the name Tacapae and belonged to Tripolitania . A first mention can be found in Apuleius . During the Second World War , the city was badly damaged when fighting between the Axis Powers and the Allies broke out here and the 30 km south-east of the Mareth Line .

In 1959 and 1962 the Oued Gabès caused severe floods, in 1962 80 people were killed and many houses were destroyed.

economy

Gabès is the center of a coastal oasis with over 500,000 date palms and fruit tree cultures such as B. Pomegranates . Gabès is also known for the henna produced here .

Gabès' economy is based on a chemical industry , an oil refinery , cement and canning factories, and fishing , tourism and handicrafts .
