The Gulf of Gabès (formerly: Kleine Syrte , Latin Syrtis Minor ) is a bay on the east coast of Tunisia south of the Gulf of Hammamet . It is traditionally included in the Libyan Sea , a part of the open Mediterranean , and forms its westernmost area. The bay is about 100 km long and wide and is bounded by the island of Djerba in the southeast and the Kerkenna islands in the northeast.

A more precise delimitation is possible with a line from Ras Yonga (50 km southwest of Sfax ) in the north to Bordj Djellidj , the north-western cape of the island of Djerba, which means a distance of 68.3 km.

Another source specifies Caput Vada (today Ras Kapudia ) as the northern border point . This is near the city of Chebba 66 km north of Sfax, and 45 km north of the Kerkenna Islands. With this delimitation, the Kerkenna Islands extend somewhat into the Gulf of Gabes, at least in the west.

A historical delimitation denotes a line from the promontory (cape) of Zeitha on Meninx (today Djerba) to the promontory of Brachodes . Brachodes is at Ras Kapudiah and Zeitha is an ancient city on Djerba.
