The Gabès Governorate ( Arabic قابس, DMG Qābis ) is one of the 24 governorates in Tunisia . It is located in the southeast of the country, about 400 km (driving distance) south of Tunis on the Mediterranean coast at an altitude of 0 to 200 m above sea level. d. M. and covers an area of 7175 km² (approx. 4.4% of the total area of Tunisia). The population is about 375,000. The capital of the region is the city of the same name, Gabès . The governorate was established on June 21, 1956.

climate
The average temperatures are - depending on the altitude and the cloud cover - between 2 and 12 ° C in winter nights and between 10 and 25 ° C during the day; the summer temperatures are mostly in the range between 30 and 40 ° C during the day and between 10 and 30 ° C at night. The annual amount of precipitation usually fluctuates between approx. 150 and 250 millimeters.
economy
The cultivation of date palms is still the dominant economic sector in the region; in between vegetables (peas, beans, etc.) are grown. In the hinterland there is also some cattle breeding (sheep, goats). The fishing port of Gabès is also of regional importance.
nature
The region is largely semi-desert to desert-like; in between there are a few oases. Also worth mentioning is the Chott el Fedjadj , an eastern tip of the mostly dried up Chott el Djerid that protrudes into the region .
history

The few oases have been inhabited by Berbers for thousands of years ; in addition, the region was a transit area for trade caravans. Only a few remains attest to the presence of the Romans . The residents of the region were very reluctant to embrace Islam .
Culture
Only sparse evidence has survived from Roman times. In the governorate are the Berber cave dwellings of Matmata .
