Mareth ( Arabic : مارث Māraṯ ) is a Tunisian city in the Gabès governorate with 10,923 inhabitants (as of 2004).

About 30 kilometers northeast of Mareth is the city of Gabès , 35 kilometers southwest of Medenine and 44 kilometers east of the island of Djerba . Mareth is located in eastern Tunisia, about seven kilometers from the coast of the Gulf of Gabes , which is part of the Libyan Sea . In the southwest the Matmata Heights rise up to 800 meters , in the south the Wadi Zigzaou strives from the heights to the sea.
The Mareth line and its fortifications , which were fought over during the African campaign in 1943, stretched near and named after the city .
