Medenine ( Arabic مدنين, DMG Madanīn ) is a city in southeastern Tunisia with around 65,000 inhabitants. It is the capital of the governorate of the same name .
location
Medenine lies at a height of approx. 80 m above sea level. d. M. in the Djeffara plain between the Dahar mountains and the Mediterranean coast with the offshore island of Djerba . The distance to the northern capital Tunis is about 485 km (driving distance).
economy
The former Berber settlement lived for centuries from agriculture and the caravan trade . Today Medenine is on the main route to Libya and is a popular destination for day trippers from the island of Djerba .
history
In pre-colonial times, Medenine was an important market place at the crossroads of several caravan routes and the center of the powerful Berber tribe of the Ouerghamma . During the French colonial era , Medenine was developed into a garrison town and a regional administrative center.
In March 1943, a battle between Erwin Rommel's army and the troops of Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery took place here.
Attractions
There used to be a large old town in Medenine with a complex of 35 ksour with 8000 barrel-vaulted storage rooms ( ghorfas ), some of which were arranged on six floors . However, these were largely demolished after Tunisia's independence in 1957 in the course of modernization, which deprived the city of a possible tourist attraction. Only three ksour are left and now house a souvenir market.
- outside
About 7 km to the northwest is the place Metameur , which also contains the remains of a ksar.
