Metameur (formerly Om Tamer ) is a Berber village with around 1500 inhabitants in the Medenine Governorate in southern Tunisia .
location
Metameur lies in slightly elevated terrain approx. 100 m above sea level. d. M. about 7 km (driving distance) northwest of Medenine .
economy
For centuries, the inhabitants of the place lived from agriculture and the caravan trade . Today, many day-trippers from the island of Djerba visit the Ksar .
history
As with most of the Maghreb settlements inhabited by Berbers, nothing is known about the previous history of the place.
Attractions
The only attraction is the warehouse castle ( ksar ) with its mostly two-story chambers ( ghorfas ) grouped around a huge courtyard . These are made of rubble and clay , accessible via stairs or with the help of ladders and - probably due to the lack of suitable wood - are arched. In times of threat, the farm area could be used for cattle; Most of the time, however, it served as a resting and storage area for caravans . The exact age of the structure is in the dark.
