Mahdia ( Arabic ولاية المهدية, DMG wilāyat al-Mahdīya ) is one of the 24 governorates in Tunisia . It is located on the Mediterranean coast in the middle east of the country and has an area of ​​2,878 km² and a population of 400,400. This is 2.7 percent of the total population. The name of the capital is also Mahdia . On June 5, 1974, this governorate together with the governorate of Monastir was separated from the governorate of Sousse, which had existed since 1956 .

Geography and climate

Mahdia has 75 kilometers of coastline that borders Monastir to the north and Sfax Governorate to the south . Inland it borders on Kairouan . The annual average temperature is 22 ° C, the average rainfall is between 200 and 300 millimeters.

economy

Mahdia has a very strong agricultural character, with almonds being cultivated on 23,000 hectares , and cattle breeding and dairy farming. Olive trees for olive oil are grown on 143,000 hectares . The fishing of Mahdia accounts for 15 percent of the national total catch.

In the secondary sector , the clothing industry is most strongly represented with 93 companies. There are also 34 processing companies for the agricultural sector and nine manufacturing companies for glass and ceramics, as well as some chemical, mechanical, metallurgical and electrotechnical companies.

The service sector, including tourism in particular , is growing the fastest: the Mahdia Governorate currently has 23 hotels with a total of 6,700 beds.
