The population is 415,900; the majority of the people live in rural areas . The capital of the region is the city of the same name, Sidi Bouzid .
history
The governorate as it is today was founded in 1973. The region was the starting point of the Tunisian revolution in December 2010 , after which the greengrocer Mohamed Bouazizi burned himself to death in the capital of the governorate . The ensuing riots in Sidi Bouzid quickly spread across the country and paved the way for the Arab Spring .

Culture
Many small finds indicate that the region around Sidi Bouzid already played an important role in Roman times.
