economy

Olive culture in Sfax Governorate

The most important industries are olive oil production, fishing and phosphate mining. Of the total yield in Tunisia, 40 percent of the olive oil and 30 percent of the almond production come from Sfax. The population of olive trees is estimated at 6.1 million and that of almond trees at 5 million. Furthermore, petroleum and natural gas promoted, followed by tourism and fishing. The income from the fishing port accounts for 20 percent of Tunisia's total catch. The industrial port, installed in 1905, is the second largest in the country, as is the city of Sfax after the capital Tunis . Other important branches of production are the consumer goods industry and carpet weaving mills .

The number of employees in the three economic sectors of agriculture, production and services are roughly the same at one third each. In the service sector, the tourism industry is particularly important, especially on the offshore Kerkenna Islands , where up to 150,000 people vacation at the same time in summer.
