Skhira ( Arabic الصخيرة, formerly: Skhirra) is a Tunisian port city in the Gulf of Gabès (formerly 'Kleine Syrte'). The Schott el Dscherid joins in the west .
geography
Skira is located in the middle of the Gulf of Gabès (formerly 'Kleine Syrte', Latin Syrtis Minor ), a bay on the east coast of Tunisia south of the Gulf of Hammamet .
development
The old town flourished in the 19th century with the trade and export of esparto grass . The grass was used to make high quality alfa paper .
The city is one of the centers of the oil trade in North Africa. Pipelines from oil fields from other parts of Tunisia and Libya terminate in Skhira. Refineries prepare the oil for transport by tanker. Another refinery is under construction and is expected to have a capacity of six million tons per year.
The Portuguese company Consulmar leads a consortium to which u. a. the Tunisian company Comete belongs. The consortium is to plan a new port infrastructure and build a new chemical terminal.
