The Monastir Governorate ( Arabic ولاية المنستير) is one of 24 governorates in Tunisia . It is located on the Mediterranean coast in the northeast of the country, has an area of ​​1,024 km² (the fourth smallest governorate in terms of area) and a population of 525,500. The capital is the city of the same name, Monastir .

Monastir has a coastline of 35 kilometers to the Mediterranean Sea. It borders the Mahdia Governorate to the south and the Sousse Governorate to the north . Administratively, the governorate is divided into 13 delegations and 31 municipalities .

economy

Most of the country is used by agriculture (approx. 86 percent of the total area); by far the most important crop is the olive . The second most important economic sector is the clothing industry with production mainly for the European Community , followed by tourism and fishing .
