Moknine ( Arabic المكنين) is a city and a delegation with around 90,000 inhabitants in eastern Tunisia .
location
Moknine lies at a height of approx. 5 to 30 m above sea level. d. M. not far from the Mediterranean coast. The cities of Monastir and Sousse are about 23 and 43 km (driving distance) northwest; the city of Sfax is just under 120 km south. In the south of the city there is an extensive swamp area ( Sabcha ), in which a lake forms after heavy or prolonged rainfall.
economy
Moknine is still largely agricultural; the cultivation area for wheat, vegetables etc. is still around 70% of the community area. However, craft, trade, small industry and the service sector are on the rise.
history
There was probably a Berber settlement in the area of Moknine before the arrival of the Phoenicians . Later the place came under Roman rule ; Roman traces were discovered at around 60 sites - including around 20 kilns, which shows that the tradition of making pottery, already practiced by the Berbers and Phoenicians, continued under the Romans; some finds are on display in the Sousse Archaeological Museum . Vandals and Byzantines left no traces in the region. Although Tunisia was conquered by the Arabs in the second half of the 7th century, the first larger mosque in Moknine was not built until the middle of the 13th century.
