history
The region was formerly settled by Berbers who were subjugated by the Romans . In the 6th century, the Byzantines controlled the area with their fortifications. Since the second half of the 7th century, Islam has dominated religious and spiritual life.
Culture
The buildings in the village of Ellès, made of smooth, large stones, date from the late megalithic period . The most important Roman town in the governorate is Le Kef ( Colonia Iulia Veneria Cirta Nova Sicca ) itself, but the sites near El Medina are also important. The remains of several fortresses from the Byzantine era are mostly in very poor condition; the kasbah of Le Kef dates from the Ottoman period (17th century).
