Patrice Tlhopane Motsepe (born January 28, 1962 in Johannesburg ) is a South African entrepreneur , billionaire and in managerial positions at various South African mining companies . His African Rainbow Minerals group includes platinum , gold , nickel , copper , iron and coal mines . Even in the crisis year 2009, Motsepe's company generated an operating profit of almost $ 600 million.

Life

Motsepe's parents lived in the township settlements of Johannesburg before he was born . His mother comes from a royal line of the Tswana tribe , his father was an opponent of the apartheid government in South Africa and ran a grocery store.

Motsepe studied law at the University of Swaziland and as one of the few blacks at the Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg. In 1988 he joined Bowman Gilfillan Inc., one of the largest South African law firms. In 1993 he became the firm's first non-white partner.

In 1994 Motsepe founded the mining company Future Mining . ARMgold ( African Rainbow Minerals ) followed three years later and has been listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange since 2002 . In 2003, ARMgold merged with Harmony Gold Mining Company Ltd. Further takeovers and mergers followed. Today Motsepe sits on the supervisory and executive boards of several important South African companies. For example, Ubuntu-Botho Investments , where he is CEO , holds 10 percent of the share capital of Sanlam Limited . With the majority stake in the Canadian-based TEAL Exploration and Mining Inc. and its incorporation into the ARM complex, Motsepe significantly increased the exploration capacities of its mining company in southern Africa.

In 2002, Motsepe was named South Africa's Business Leader of the Year by the CEOs of the 100 largest South African companies . In the same year he won the Ernst & Young Best Entrepreneur of the Year Award .

Since 2003 he has also been the owner and president of the South African soccer club Mamelodi Sundowns .

Private

Patrice Motsepe is married and has three sons. He is considered the first black billionaire and one of the richest men in South Africa .
