history

The company was founded in 1950. From 1994 to 2005 the company grew strongly, particularly through acquisitions. South African billionaire and founder of other mining companies, Patrice Motsepe , becomes CEO in 2005. In the years that followed, the company expanded its business areas and, in addition to further acquisitions, also concluded strategic alliances with other mining companies.

On the morning of October 3, 2007, the main elevator of the Elandsrand gold mine (also Elandskraal mine) at Far West Rand , about 10 km southwest of Carletonville in the province of Gauteng , was broken in a compressed air line which fell down in an elevator shaft . put out of service. As a result, 3,200 miners were stuck at a depth of 2,150 meters. By the evening of October 4th, all of the buddies were rescued. Nobody was injured or killed in the accident, and the buddies had fresh air and water. The rescue of those trapped at around 40 degrees Celsius air temperature is delayed by a poorly maintained escape shaft and because of the low capacity of the freight elevator with which the miners are rescued.
