African Rainbow Minerals (ARM) is a South African mining company with headquarters in Sandton ( Johannesburg ). It was created in 2003 from the merger of several mining companies.

The company deals with the extraction of mineral raw materials. Primarily iron and manganese ores, platinum metals, nickel and chrome ores, gold, copper ores and coal are mined. ARM was created by the South African Patrice Motsepe , who developed this widely branched mining group out of his start-up company Future Mining and is also Deputy Chairman (Vice Chairman, non-executive) of Sanlam Limited . In 2004, the company was restructured after the integration.

structure

The mining group is divided into the following business areas:

Brief description of the business areas

ARM Platinum

The ARM Platinum division comprises four sectors of platinum metal mining . There are three mines as well as an exploration area. As a result of the extraction work and its further processing, the following metals are produced: platinum , palladium , rhodium , ruthenium and iridium , as well as nickel , cobalt , copper and gold .

The Modikwa Platinum Mine is located northwest of the town of Burgersfort , which is operated by a diverse group of owners. Here the ARM Mining Consortium holds 50 percent and Anglo American Platinum 50 percent in equal shares. ARM Mining Consortium is composed of a majority for ARM and a minority for Modikwa Communities . The yielded ores come for further processing in the smelting and refining plants of Anglo American Platinum .

Not far from Steelpoort , ARM (55%) operates the Two Rivers Platinum Mine together with Impala Platinum (45%) . The extraction products are further processed at Impala Refining Services Limited (IRS).

The Nkomati Nickel Mine near the town of Machadodorp is a joint venture between ARM and Norilsk Nickel Africa (Pty) Ltd. , a subsidiary of MMC Norilski Nikel . Here the extraction of copper is in the foreground in terms of volume, after nickel and chromium production has declined. All ore concentrates are processed and refined by the company Metal Trade Overseas AG (MTO) based in Zug , Switzerland . It belongs to the company complex of MMC Norilski Nikel .

As part of the exploration project ( Kalplats PGM Exploration Project ), a deposit is being investigated to determine whether it is worth mining for platinum, palladium and gold. It is planned to test the extraction and processing of platinum metals and gold in a pilot plant. Are involved ARM Platinum and Platinum Australia (PLA). The Australian partner is in charge of the exploration project.

ARM Ferrous

The extraction of iron and manganese ores in the ARM Ferrous division goes back to the Associated Manganese Mines of South Africa Limited (AMMOSAL), which was created through the merger in 1935 . This company later became the Assmang company . When Anglovaal Mining was taken over into the structures of ARM in 2004, Assmang Ltd. came with him as the main shareholder . into the division of African Rainbow Mining . Since then Assmang Ltd. a joint venture between ARM and Assore Limited (50/50) and operates the iron ore, manganese ore and chrome ore mining divisions.

The considerable tonnages involved in iron ore extraction and smelting require efficient transport routes. Therefore, the extraction activities are linked to the availability and efficient operation of supraregional transport routes. Several trading ports in South Africa form the domestic endpoints of the associated raw material exports. The alloying additives chromium and manganese, which are important for steel production, are extracted in mines which are located far from the coast in the north and east of South Africa.

The Iron Ore Division includes two mines, the Beeshoek Iron Ore Mine and the Khumani Iron Ore Mine in the Northern Cape Province. The removal of ores is done on the Sishen-Saldanha railway line to the port of Saldanha .

The Khumani Mine is 65 kilometers north of the older Beeshoek mine, but south of Kathu and not far from Sishen, which is known for its iron ore mining . It produces for international customers. The Beeshoek Mine is located near the town of Postmasburg .

An outcrop of chromite layers that have gained economic importance in the eastern part of the Bushveld complex , south of Steelpoort .

African Rainbows Minerals extracts chrome ores within its chrome division through Assmang in the Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine . This is located in the eastern part of the Mpumalanga province about 30 kilometers from Steelpoort. Your raw or mechanically processed degradation products reach the Machadodorp Ferrochrome Works in eNtokozweni . End products are delivered from here by road or rail to Richards Bay or the Mozambican port in Maputo .

For Manganese Division ( Manganese Division ) of ARM Ferrous includes two mines and the processing site Cato Ridge Works Ferromanganese . The two mining areas, Nchwaning Mine and the Gloria Manganese Mines are located in the extreme northeast of the Northern Cape Province, northwest of the city of Kuruman . Your products will be transported by rail and road to the Cato Ridge Alloys (Pty) Ltd. smelter . in Cato Ridge in order to supply Japanese and German customers via the port in Port Elizabeth . Cato Ridge Alloys is a joint venture between Assmang , Mizushima Ferroalloy Company Limited and Sumitomo Corporation . Deliveries go to the port of Richards Bay for direct export of the extraction products. Ore concentrates also reach eNtokozweni in Mpumalanga, where they are further processed for export. The Nchwaning mine extracts raw materials from the Kalahari Manganese Field , which come from a Proterozoic sediment complex.

ARM Coal

The ARM Coal division was created in July 2006 through a partnership with Xstrata Coal South Africa plc. Xstrata Holding SA holds 49% of the shares in ARM Coal .

On Participating Coal Business (PCB) ARM Coal holds a 20.2% and ARM with 10%. The majority is held by Xstrata Coal South Africa plc. held. 6,726 people are employed in this area. ARM Coal controls the coal port on the Indian Ocean through Xstrata's 16.5% stake in the Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) .

Not far from the city of Ogies in the Mpumalanga province , Xstrata Coal South Africa (XCSA) with 49% and ARM Coal with 51% of shares operate the Goedgevonden Coal Mine (GGV). The mining area is located on the southern edge of the Witbank coal district .

ARM Copper

In the ARM Copper division , the operational focus of activity is on copper mining. To this end, ARM and Vale SA operate the Konkola North Copper Mine in the Chilabombwe district in northern Zambia . There is also a joint mining company Lusaka and Kabwe with Vale SA .

The most recent development is the Lubambe copper project in Zambia. The developed copper ore mine ( Lubambe Copper Mine Limited ) is designed with a service life of 28 years. About 6 kilometers further south, a future possibility of expansion ( Lubambe Extension Area resource ) is being investigated . The mine is a joint venture company (50/50) with Vale SA , which together make up 80% of the mine and the remaining 20% is held by the Zambian state-owned company ZCCM Investment Holdings plc (87.6% state-owned). It is headquartered in Chingola . Their economically used deposit is part of the Zambian Copperbelt and it is not far from the city of Chilabombwe .

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo , ARM, together with the Canadian company TEAL Exploration and Mining Incorporated and with the participation of Gécamines in the Kalumines project , is investigating whether a potential mining of copper and cobalt ores northwest of Lubumbashi appears profitable. Early exploration in the Lupoto Copper Project , before TEAL activities, began by mining companies Union Minière du Haut Katanga and Gécamines .

ARM gold

In the ARM Gold division , African Rainbow Minerals focuses on gold mining. The operative business is carried out by the company Harmony Gold .

The domestic mining sites are primarily in the Witwatersrand Basin and Harmony Gold, with these mines, is one of the world's largest gold mining companies. The extraction sites are located in the provinces of North West , Gauteng ( South Sotho : "place of gold"), Mpumalanga and Free State and thus in the area of the historically significant areas for South Africa's gold mining.

In the area of foreign activities of the business unit ARM Gold holds Harmony Gold 50% stake in the in Papua New Guinea operating companies Morobe Mining Joint Ventures (MMJV). Through this, a surface gold and silver mining is operated with the Australian partner company Newcrest Mining in the Hidden Valley mine in the province of Morobe . Preparations are also underway for possible future extraction work in the Wafi Golpu deposit.

ARM exploration

The focus in the field of raw material exploration lies in the assessment of possible and qualified fields of activity for the company in the sub-Saharan region of Africa. On July 1, 2011, the ARM Copper division took on the further exploration and project development tasks for ARM's copper mining activities.

An agreement was signed with the Mozambican exploration company Rovuma Resources , a majority company owned by Rockover Resources in Road Town on the British Virgin Islands , which requires ARM to search for deposits in Mozambique for minable deposits of manganese ores at an annual cost of US $ 7 million , Nickel, platinum metals and base metals. With this, the ARM wants to secure further activities for the exploration of deposits and a possible mining.

The company TEAL Exploration & Mining Inc. today (2013) operates as a subsidiary of ARM and its Brazilian partner company Companhia Vale do Rio Doce in exploration and reservoir development.
