Chililabombwe (literally translated "female croaking frog"; other names: Bancroft , Chiliabombwe , Chilabombwe , Chiliadomewe ) is a town in the Copperbelt province in Zambia . It has 57,834 inhabitants (2006 estimate). It is the seat of the administration of the district of the same name with 67,533 inhabitants (2000 census). It is 1400 meters above sea level and ten kilometers from the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo . It is the northern terminus of a route on the Zambia Railways .

economy

Chililabombwe is the city with the largest copper reserves in southern Africa. The first mining, the Bancroft Mine , opened in 1957. Today the Konkola Copper Mine (KCM) is the largest. Nevertheless, 80% of the men work in subsistence agriculture . 15% have formal jobs. Since 1990, 25% of the population has left the city. KCM is currently developing deeper layers, 250 million tons with an ore grade of 4%, which will create work by 2032.

A new melting plant should be ready in 2008.

Infrastructure

Chililabombwe has primary and secondary schools, a hospital, an airstrip, the Konkola Stadium , English clubs and what is probably the most dangerous golf course in the world: “Beware of crocodiles at holes 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 13, 14, 15 , 17 and 18 “, warns a sign. The golfer shares the dry terrain with elephants, hippos, buffalos, monkeys and antelopes of all kinds.

In a study from 2001 UNICEF found an average child labor rate of 20% in Zambia , but of 70% in Mpika , Chinsali and Chililabombwe. Child sexual abuse is 10 percent higher than the national average of 72% for girls and 28% for boys as well as in Mansa , Mpika, Nchelenge , Chinsali and Kaoma .
