Geographical location of Mpelembe in Zambia

Mpelembe , also Mpongwe , is a town with 9035 inhabitants (2006 estimate) in the Copperbelt Province in Zambia . It is located on the road via Masaiti 70 kilometers south of Luanshya and 90 kilometers from Ndola at 1219 meters above sea level. It is the seat of the administration of the district of the same name with 80,456 inhabitants.

economy

Mpelembe is a rural district with good to very good soils and more forest. It is considered a “booming” district with a low population density and a lot of fallow arable land. Immigration from the northern mining areas, northern Zimbabwe and the southern province is high. The main products are corn, wheat and soy with a total of 100,000 tons. Mpelembe covers about half of the Zambian demand for soy and a fifth for wheat. This is followed by small amounts of sweet potatoes, charcoal, coffee, honey and bee wax. Projects try to use the forest for mushrooms and beekeeping and to process these products ready for the market. Various large farms work in the district. The Mpongwe Farm, run as a British project, works on 15,000 hectares, of which 4,500 are irrigated. The Dar Farms Limited processed 60,000 hectares. There are also other goods.

There are only small markets in Mpelembe. All farmers sell the same products and local purchasing power is low. So the main market is Luanshya, even if transportation costs are high and prices are uncertain. The road there was paved in 2005.

Infrastructure

There is an unpaved, 1000 meter long runway, the Kafue Lodge, primary and secondary schools and hospitals.
