Mufulira is a city in Zambia in the Copperbelt province with 120,516 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2005). It is the fourth largest city in Zambia. It is 1,300 meters above sea level and is the seat of the administration of the district of the same name with 143,930 inhabitants (2000 census).
economy
Mufulira is a transport hub in the center of the Copperbelt copper mining area on the northern border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo . The copper deposits were discovered in 1923, and in 1951 the first settlement around a mine was built. Today there is the largest underground mine in Africa in Mufulira. Mufulira has the richest copper deposits, but in terms of political and economic importance it lags well behind Ndola and Kitwe .
Besides mining ( Glencore International AG, First Quantum Minerals Ltd, ZCCM), Mufulira has little industry: a copper refinery, technical services and an explosives factory.
Mufulira has around 60 percent unemployment.
Infrastructure
There is a notable hotel and restaurant industry and various elementary and secondary schools and hospitals that have been built and paid for by the mining companies. There is also a teacher training facility and a soil and grain cultivation research institute of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries.
Sports
The city is home to the Mufulira Wanderers football club , which has won several Zambian champions.
