Chingola is a city in the Copperbelt Province in Zambia with 148,554 inhabitants (2006). It is 1400 meters above sea level and is the seat of the administration of the district of the same name with 172,026 inhabitants (2000 census).

history

Chingola was founded in 1943 in a densely forested area and received city rights in 1957 .

economy

Chingola is mainly an underground and open pit mining town . The second largest open pit copper mine in the world is located there. The city is closely intertwined and divided into several districts, including Nchanga North and South, Kabundi, Riverside and Chiwempala. The falling prices for copper on the world market in the 1990s had left little of that. Nowadays, however, it is mainly KCM ( Konkola Copper Mines ), a new merger of an Indian and Zambian company, that is driving the mining of copper again and is also building and running new social facilities, such as schools or hospitals such as the South Hospital . Most parts of the city now have running water and electricity. However, this is often switched off for several hours in the poorer parts of the city because Zambia's only electricity supplier ZESCO does not have enough capacity and also sells a lot of electricity to Zambia's neighboring countries.

The roads in Chingola are in need of repair. Mining companies are now making set-aside land available to the settlers.

Culture and leisure

Chingola has its own theater. However, it is now in need of renovation and performances are rarely offered or visited. The former outdoor pool and the cinema have also already been closed. Since there are hardly any tourists in Chingola, this city does not offer many tourist attractions in the traditional sense. Only the nearby Chimfunshi chimpanzee hatchery is mentioned in travel guides.

The Nchanga Rangers are a soccer club in Chingola. Its stadium has 15,000 seats.

The national soccer player Andrew Sinkala , who played in the German Bundesliga, and his brother Nathan Sinkala were born in Chingola in 1979 and 1990 respectively.

traffic

Chingola is on the T3 highway and on the railway line to Kitwe . The T5 road begins in the village and also runs to Solwezi and on to a border crossing on the Zambian- Angolan border.

A new railway line ( North-Western Railway Line ) via Solwezi to the border, via Jimbe and on to the Atlantic coast of Angola is planned. It should have its end point in the port of Luanda . According to other sources, the planned end point is in Lobito .

Chingola has its own airport, but only small planes are allowed to land and take off.

Utilities

Chingola has elementary and secondary schools, hospitals (including an orthopedic department) and hotels. The city is considered the most picturesque place in the Copperbelt, which used to have the best infrastructure in Zambia.
