Kalulushi is a city in the province of Copperbelt in Zambia . It is 14 kilometers west of Kitwe at 1,300 meters above sea level and has 69,720 inhabitants (2006 estimate).

history

Kalulushi was founded as a miners' settlement in 1953 near Chibulumba and received city rights in 1958.

economy

Today the Chibulumbamine is the smallest operating mine in Zambia. There are copper and cobalt recovered. In 2006, the number of jobs rose again for the first time in a long time. There is food industry, wood processing, plastic manufacturing, chemistry and metal crafts. To the west of Kalulushi is the Chati Forest Reserve , in which large areas of eucalyptus trees , but also tropical conifers and other woody plants are planted and harvested in order to supply the mines with pit wood.

Infrastructure

Kalulushi has elementary and secondary schools as well as a school for the deaf and mute. The Chapula Zambia Center for Horticultural Training trains smallholders in irrigation techniques . There is a hospital.
