Felix Katongo (born April 18, 1984 in Mufulira ) is a Zambian football player who is active as a midfielder . His older brother Chris Katongo is also a professional footballer.
Club career
Katongo began his football career with three clubs in his native Zambia. In 2005 he moved to South Africa in the Premier Soccer League for Jomo Cosmos . At that time, his brother Chris, with whom he had previously worked for the Green Buffaloes between 2002 and 2004 , also played there. But while his brother was able to prevail at Jomo Cosmos, Felix was loaned to his previous club Green Buffaloes after a season back to Zambia.
In 2007 he left the Zambian league again and moved to Petro Atlético in Angola. There he played as a hanging tip behind Manucho before he moved to the French Ligue 1 club Stade Rennes on January 31, 2008 after strong performances at the Africa Cup in 2008 shortly before the end of the transfer period . There he could not assert himself, however, and after an unsuccessful loan period at the second division LB Châteauroux in the summer of 2009, he moved to the South African first division Mamelodi Sundowns .
On August 6, 2010 it was announced that Katongo, who was previously released at the Sundowns, is moving to Libyan first division club Al Ittihad .
National team career
Felix Katongo won the U-20 COSAFA Cup with the Zambian U20 national team in 2003 . In 2005 he was appointed to the senior national team of Zambia for the first time by national coach Kalusha Bwalya . There he first played in left midfield, but soon competed for this place with his former U-20 teammate Clifford Mulenga .
In the preliminary round at the 2006 African Cup of Nations, Katongo was used in all three games. A few months later he showed a strong performance at the COSAFA Cup 2006, especially in the 2-0 win in the final against Angola , which is why he signed the Angolan club Petro Atlético for the 2007 season.
During the Africa Cup of Nations 2008 in Ghana, Katongo played in all three preliminary round games as the central midfielder in the 4-3-3 system of coach Patrick Phiri and showed consistently strong performances. He was named man of the game in both the 3-0 win over Sudan and the 1-5 loss to Cameroon . After a 1-1 draw in the last group game against Egypt, however, they were eliminated from the tournament as third in the preliminary round, just like two years earlier.
Katongo was also part of the Zambian squad at the 2010 African Cup of Nations. He played in all games, but retired with the team in the quarterfinals.
