Margarete Seemann (born July 26, 1893 in Vienna ; † June 6, 1949 ibid), pseudonym Margarete Margmann , was an Austrian author of novels, children and young people.

Life

Margarete Seemann was the daughter of a decorative painter from South Moravia and a mother from Vienna. She came from a middle-class family and grew up in the Josefstadt district of Vienna and in Guldenfurth near Nikolsburg in South Moravia . She went to school with the Ursulines and prepared for her future career as a primary school teacher. As such, she was confronted with the reality of social and material hardship in the Viennese working-class districts, she taught in Hernals and lived in Meidling since 1937 . She was socially committed and created fairy tales and other plays for children, which are written in the Catholic spirit, to amuse and educate children. Readings from her books were very popular in the 1930s. Her verses and stories for children were designed by famous illustrators, such as Ida Bohatta . Especially in the 1930s and 1940s, her books were published by Catholic publishers and are still published today. Margarete Seemann fell ill with bone cancer in 1937, from which she died after a long suffering in 1949 and was buried in the Hetzendorfer Friedhof , where she received an honorary grave of the City of Vienna (group 15, grave no. 75). In 1993 the Margarete-Seemann-Weg in Vienna-Meidling was named after her.

Works

Margarete Seemann was referred to as the "poet of mothers" and "Austrian Selma Lagerlöf". Her works emerged from her Catholic faith and were very successful. 60 of her poems have been set to music by various composers and her books have been translated into 7 languages, including Japanese. In addition to her children's books, her poems and aphorisms in particular also met with lasting approval.
