The Kehrer Verlag is an art book publisher that on photography , visual arts and sound art specializes. The publisher's publications are created in conjunction with Kehrer Design, the affiliated office for design and image processing.

The publishing house was founded in 1995 by Klaus Kehrer . The headquarters of the publishing house has been a loft in the Heinsteinwerk in Heidelberg, a listed former ceramic factory (built in 1912).

From 2010 to 2013 the publisher was present in a showroom in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg . Book presentations and artist talks were organized there on a regular basis.

In 2014 the Kehrer Gallery opened in Potsdamerstr. 100 in Berlin. German and international photographers were presented here in changing exhibitions. Since May 2019 the premises of the gallery - now under the responsibility of Erik Spiekermann and under the name analog - have become a "showroom for the special book", in which u. a. New publications and backlist titles from Kehrer Verlag are presented and available for purchase. The Kehrer Gallery will continue to exist as a pop-up gallery until further notice.

The publisher is a member of the German Book Trade Association . From 2011 to 2016 the publishing house was a German partner of the European Publisher Award for Photography (EPAP), an initiative of European publishing houses to promote contemporary photography. The winning project was announced at the Rencontres d'Arles and published in book form in five countries at the same time.

Kehrer Verlag has been a partner of the Nordic Dummy Award (also called NDA) since 2014. The award is an initiative of Fotogalleriet Oslo and the Norwegian Association of Fine Art Photographers. The NDA is periodically awarded to young photo artists whose project has a focus on the Nordic countries.

From 2014 to 2017, Kehrer Verlag also participated as a sponsor and project partner in the C / O Berlin Talent Award, a sponsorship award that honors a tandem of young photographers and art critics up to 35 years of age.

The publisher and employees of the publishing house are also jury members for renowned photography and book awards.

Publishing program

The publisher publishes around 80 titles a year. He works closely with photographers, artists and institutions and has made a name for himself on the international art and photo book market with his artistically demanding program. In addition to the "classic" photo books, collector's editions have also found a place in the publishing program for some time.

The photographers and artists whose works have been published by Kehrer Verlag include Christopher Anderson, Elina Brotherus, Paul Cézanne , Robert Delauney, Matthieu Gafsou, Bruce Gilden, Guido Guidi, Oskar Kokoschka, Saul Leiter , Helen Levitt, Sarah Moon, Nicholas Nixon, Anders Petersen , Kenji Toma, Julius Shulman , Fiona Tan , Donald Wexler and many more.

Important institutions with which the publisher cooperates include the Tinguely Museum in Basel, the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, the Städel Museum in Frankfurt, the Versicherungskammer Kulturstiftung in Munich, the Albertina and the Kunstforum Wien.
