Life

Anders Petersen studied photography with Christer Strömholm in Stockholm in 1966/1967 . He visited Hamburg for the first time at the age of 18 and happened upon Café Lehmitz , a beer bar on the Reeperbahn . When he visited again in 1968, he began to photograph the guests. The recordings he made over the course of three years were published in book form in 1978. His photo Lily and Rose , which served as the LP cover for Tom Wait's 1985 album Rain Dogs , became particularly famous .

Café Lehmitz is now regarded as classics of the milieu Photography : "While men drunk on the bodice fumble deranged women, is for the moment between Wettsauferei, free divestments and pointless cockfights in the deep black grit mm photography all right. Without a doubt, Petersen succeeded in engaging in the best hours of the desperate. "

Together with Kenneth Gustavsson , Petersen founded the Stockholm photographer group SAFTRA in 1970, at the same time he taught at the Christer Strömholms photography school.

Petersen has published over 20 books since then; they were compared with “diaries of his experiences with people and places that one only encounters on the outskirts or under cover of darkness.” Petersen et al. a. Photographed in prisons, nursing homes and psychiatric clinics.

From November 2013 to February 2014, the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris hosted an extensive exhibition devoted to Petersen's work in retrospect in 330 photographs. The official exhibition catalog with a foreword by Urs Stahel and Hasse Persson was published in French by the BnF. The illustrated book was published in English by Thames & Hudson and in German by Schirmer / Mosel .

The retrospective exhibition was on view in the Munich City Museum from March 27th to June 28th, 2015 .
