Zambia Railways , actually Zambia Railways Limited , or ZR for short, is the state rail infrastructure company of Zambia .

history

Today's Zambia was a British- dominated colony from the end of the 19th century . Thus railroad construction in Zambia also went back to the British colonial power. In 1893 the Bechuanaland Railway Company was founded in London , which was renamed Rhodesia Railways in 1899 . Through mergers with other railway companies, the Rhodesia Railways operated a large part of the rail network in their area around 1930. In 1930, Beyer-Peacock placed an initial order for four Garratt locomotives of the 15 series, which were followed by 70 more locomotives by 1952, most recently in the improved 15A series. In 1987 50 of these locomotives were still available. From 1954 to 1958, 61 Garratt locomotives of the 20 series were purchased, for whose use the rail network was improved due to the total weight of 228.5 t and the axle load of 17 t.

In 1964, Rhodesia was divided into Zambia and Southern Rhodesia. The northern part of the Rhodesian Railways thus became the Zambia Railways.

network

The Zambia Railways Corporation has a route network of 1,273 kilometers. It is essentially a single route from Mulobezi southeast to Livingstone , where the Zambian railway network connects to that of the National Railways of Zimbabwe , and from there northeast to Lusaka , Kapiri Mposhi , Ndola , Kitwe to Chingola near the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo runs. From Ndola there is a line to Lubumbashi and from there it is operated by the Société Nationale des Chemins de fer du Congo (SNCC). Two short branches in the Copperbelt reach Luanshya and Mufulira . A third route leads from Choma to Masuku . The TAZARA , whose network does not belong to the Zambia Railways Corporation, connects to their network in Kapiri Mposhi.

The routes have Cape gauge and have an axle load of 17 t. Route data:

  • Greatest gradient: 1.25%
  • Rail weight: 45 kg / m, some 40 kg / m, 91 lb / yd
  • Threshold distance: 0.72 - 0.75 m
  • Sleeper type: wood, steel, concrete
  • Smallest curve radius: 200 m
  • Maximum train length: 582 m, 140 axles (some only 112 axles)

Railway companies

From 2003 Railway Systems of Zambia (RSZ) , a consortium of private, mostly South African investors, had the concession to operate Zambia Railways for 20 years. In 2012, however, the concession was revoked and Zambia Railways took over operations again.

In 1984, Zambia Railways had 101 diesel locomotives, 91 passenger cars and 6570 freight cars of various types.

Projects

A SADC project intends to build a connection from Kafue to Zave in Zimbabwe and from Chipata ( Malawi ) to TAZARA near Mpika . This means that the port of Beira and the deep-sea port of Nacala in Mozambique can be reached directly for Zambia . The construction of the Solwezi (DR Congo) - Chingola line is also planned .
